They are made to NEED upgrading after a year or so and since you can't upgrade them, you need to buy the next model. This goes for iPods, iMacs, iBooks etc Constantly being upgraded so that you waste your money. Hell even the iPhone made your last $200-$500 iPod purchase redundant.
